WHERE: La Conner, Washington, for Swinomish Yacht Club’s decades-old annual Lighted Boat Parade (12/12/2015; approx. 6:00; free)

WHY: Stunning, hand-decorated yachts and boats illuminate the Salish Sea waters of the Swinomish channel for a waterborne parade that travels from the La Conner Marina along the new La Conner Boardwalk and under the Rainbow Bridge to Shelter Bay.

WHILE IN TOWN: Stop in to the Museum of Northwest Art (10-5; free; 121 S First St.; 360.466.4446), presenting Not Vanishing: Contemporary Native American Art, 1977-2015. The exhibit seeks to bring together significant artworks by artists in the Pacific Northwest region in order to examine both the evolution of Native American artwork and the artistic strategies used by artists as they represent the complexities of Indigenous realities to the world.

GETTING HERE: From Seattle, take I-5 North to Exit 221 and go left back over I-5 and in the round-about take Fir Island Road. From Vancouver BC, take I-5 South to Exit 230 and follow Hwy 20 West.  There are highway signs directing you to turn left at the stoplight at La Conner-Whitney Road – the best landmark for this turn is Farmhouse Restaurant, on your left. Follow La Conner-Whitney Road going south until you reach the roundabout that leads into La Conner.
