Get to know Skagit Publishing

The word and the idea of ‘community’ both run deep in Skagit County, and no deeper than at Skagit Publishing. First published in 1884 as the Skagit News, valley residents have relied on this respected family-owned news source for more than 125 years.

As the county’s largest media resource, Skagit Publishing’s goal is to inform, interact and empower. According to Publisher Heather Hernandez, “Stories unfold on a daily basis. It’s important to us that we foster discussion and conversation about the issues, and accurately report the news that impacts our valley.”

Today, the company publishes not only the daily Skagit Valley Herald, but the weekly Anacortes American, Fidalgo This Week, The Argus and Courier-Times, as well as specialty publications distributed in the Northwest and British Columbia, Canada. Skagit Publishing LLC is an affiliate of Pioneer Newspapers, a Seattle-based company with daily and weekly publications in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Utah.

As times have changed, especially in the realm of media, so has Skagit Publishing. Recognizing the impact of the internet, and listening to the needs of their readership in terms of news delivery, they launched a number of local websites including goskagit.com, the most visited website in Skagit County today.

In December 2008, the publishing company moved to its new, high-tech facility on Anderson Road in Mount Vernon which included a new printing press. These days, not only does Skagit Publishing create newspapers, inserts, direct mail, websites and specialty publications of their own, but they offer competitively-priced printing options for other businesses as well.

Skagit Publishing has remained a dedicated partner in making sure that the Skagit Valley’s economy is strong and healthy, and that residents are able to take advantage of all the benefits of the valley’s superior quality of life. They have more than 30 partnerships with businesses and local organizations that organize and support the community, and each year Skagit Publishing donates significant funds and in-kind services to assist in promoting community-wide events.

Skagit Publishing is also well-respected for their ongoing efforts to help and support families in need; near and dear to company owners and employees is the Skagit Valley Christmas Fund. Each holiday season this non-profit organization donates toys, books and meals to families who would otherwise not be able to open gifts or enjoy a simple holiday celebration.

For more than 125 years, Skagit Publishing has been at the forefront of providing accurate and informational news to the Skagit Valley – as well as being a strong and steady supporter of the community at large. One widely-accepted meaning of the word community is this: ‘Rather than individually, we are collectively able to do so much more.’ Skagit Publishing works hard to uphold that ideal with everything they do.
