Winter Day Trips: Beer Tasting

The Northwest has always been known as a region full of talented brewers. That success continues in La Conner – one of Washington State’s favorite weekend getaway destinations.

Skagit County is home to several wonderful micro-breweries including La Conner’s own La Conner Brewing Company. Whether you’re looking for a weekend getaway with friends or a romantic weekend with a loved one, La Conner’s location just 20 minutes off of Interstate 5 and near both Seattle and Vancouver, BC makes it a great place to visit in Washington State.

Here’s our recommendation for taking a beer-tasting tour:

1. Starting in La Conner, visit La Conner Brewing Company where you’ll find award-winning microbrews and fabulous food including their wood-fired pizza and fresh, seasonal specialties. From Pilsners to Browns, and a rotation of seasonal offerings, the options are many for beer aficionados.

2. North Sound Brewing Company: Leaving La Conner, head north on La Conner-Whitney Road to the Highway 20 interchange. Go east on Highway 20 and take the State Highway 536 (Old Memorial Highway) exit. Follow Highway 536 to the outskirts of Mount Vernon – North Sound Brewing Co will be on your right. The friendly staff really knows their beer and can help you choose the best beers to taste, based on your preferences. While there is no kitchen, snacks are provided … and the locals often have pizza delivered. Very clever!

3. Skagit River Brewery: Continue on Highway 536 east into Mount Vernon. Cross the bridge, get into the right lane, go through the light and under the 2nd street overpass. Just pass the next stoplight you’ll see Skagit River Brewery on your left. A favorite with locals and tourists alike, you’ll find hand-crafted beers and a complete menu including delicious pizza and barbequed ribs.

5. Once you’ve quenched your thirst and sampled our award-winning local brews, head back to La Conner and finish your day with a great meal at one of our wonderful restaurants.

*If you want to take your beer tasting further afield, when you leave Mount Vernon head west on Highway 20 to Anacortes, and stop at Rockfish Grill.
